Neurosis

$15.00

Freshly diagnosed with severe mental illness, Melbourne Thompson learns of a way to cure themself of their illness once and for all. However, the cure will be taxing financially, and perhaps physically. Is the cure worth the trouble? Will Melbourne get what they want in the end?

AUTHOR’S COMMENTARY: This story was very difficult for me to write, mostly because I added some inspiration from real-life experiences with mental illness. Melbourne has schizoaffective disorder…as do I. After years of receiving the diagnosis and fighting the legitimacy of it, I received the diagnosis a final time in 2023. After years of this happening, I decided it was time to grow up and accept that this was my reality. Coming clean about it to my loved ones was very difficult. There’s such a huge stigma behind people with any “schizo-spectrum” disorder. We’re crazy, we’re disconnected, we’re dangerous. I didn’t want to be given those labels. But after I came clean, I was met with mostly patience and understanding. Sure, there were some people, such as former co-workers, who used it against me…but those incidents were few and far between. I’ve accepted it now, and I feel great. But it still served as inspiration for this story. I hope you enjoy this piece.
